Important facts when sailing by a catamaran from Venice to Croatia

Weather on the northern part of the Adriatic Sea

The summer begins in May on the Mediterranean Adriatic Sea. At this time, the average temperature is above 20 degrees. I believe, just brave ones jump into the 19-degree cold water. The hottest period is in July and August with an average temperature of over 30 degrees. So, you can take a pleasant swim in-the 24-degree sea, you won’t feel it cold. There are variable winds on the Adriatic Sea: the bora blows from north-northeast in spring and autumn whereas the southern Jugo brings warm spells. You can expect more rain accompanied by storms in the northern part that could impede your sailing. What costs to count with?

As Italy, Slovenia and Croatia are all EU-member states, you should exchange Euro. The official currency of Italy and Slovenia is Euro, in Croatia kuna is used. However, a few catering facilities accept the Euro, it is better to bring with you kuna as well. Therefore, upon your arrival in Croatia, exchange your Euro to kuna in a local bank or money exchange office. It is good to know that the Adriatic Italian ports are much more expensive in the peak season than any other ports in the region. The mooring costs vary between 90-180 Euros. This can be lower, 60-130 Euros, in the low seasons. By sailing with a catamaran, you should multiply the above prices with 1.5 times.

What to see in Venice?

Venice considered to be one of the most beautiful cities in the world consists of 118 tiny islands. It is by no coincidence that it is called the Queen of the Adriatic; its marvellous century-old buildings and its unique cityscape made it so popular. By bus from the airport, you can easily get to the city’s western, still dry end. You can walk even 2-3 km towards most of the ports. Thus, it is advisable to take the waterbus leaving from the airport that stops in many places. Meanwhile getting closer to the yacht port you can see fabulous bridges. Moreover, there are also a lot of amazing buildings and squares to see. Saint Mark’s Square is a must, for instance, by tourists. And if you still have some time, take part in a guided tour in the Doge’s Palace.

One-way or round trip?

It depends a lot how far you would like to sail. During a one-way trip, you can visit Croatia’s coastline and islands. So if you want to take this challenge, it can last 2-3 weeks depending on the number of destinations. After handing over your yacht, you can get to Venice by bus, ferry or train. The route can vary from each Croatian town, in many cases, there are more stops needed to get back to the city. Therefore, always consider travelling facilities during the planning phase. Besides, it is easier to choose the direct flights from Split and Dubrovnik to Venice. By our longer cruise, you need to hand over your yacht in Dubrovnik.
Although by visiting the towns of the Istrian Peninsula, we recommend the shorter round sailing cruise. The only obstacle could be the Meltemi wind blowing against you in the summer.
